For more than 25 years I have worked with women lawyers. I have helped them overcome challenging work environments, get new jobs, change practice areas, shift from law to other professions, develop leadership skills, focus on marketing and business development, develop work/life balance tools, meet client and employer expectations and appreciate energy management vs. time management.
What I have noticed is that women lawyers enter the practice of law with big visions and dreams of making a difference. After passing the Bar and working for several years, many feel a shift from that desire to make a difference. The reality of their work is far from satisfying.
- I hear talk of
- Frustration because opportunities to make a difference seem like “pipe” dreams
in spite of long hours honing legal skills and sacrificing personal interests. - Overwhelm, worry, and stress because the daily routine seems somewhat “out of control.”
- Self doubt about ability to generate sufficient revenues to move ahead professionally and ability to develop strategic relationships.
- Confusion about how to be authentic while developing “rainmaking” skills.
- Sadness about lack of flexibility with life outside of work.
I wanted to make a difference in the work lives of women lawyers and created the Legal Goddess Network™. Why Legal Goddess? I believe there is a goddess in every woman and the goddess can stimulate women to make powerful transformations, if we let her.
I experienced the powerful goddess transformation firsthand at my birthday celebration several years ago. My daughter Betsy, mother of 3 precious girls and founder of YogaOT (www.yogaot.com), invited female family members and my dearest friend to my birthday party as part of a larger family reunion. In her invitation, Betsy described various times in my life as Goddess times:” Goddess Athena as a teacher and community leader; Goddess Demeter as a mother and nurturer in the family; Goddess Hestia as one who opens her home to others; and Goddess Artemis who empowers women by giving them courage.” The invitation directed guests to a web site to get a goddess assessment. When family and friends gathered, we spoke about how our particular goddess resonated with us at that point in our lives. It was amazing! We represented many generations from 16 to 96 years. Some had careers, some did not. We lived in different geographic regions. Not only did we get to know one another in a more meaningful way, we felt the power of being a goddess – it was a feminine graceful power. It was not domineering or competitive. It was supportive. We appreciated and celebrated our individual gifts. We acknowledged the current realities in our different life journeys. Using the goddess language we felt more connected, braver, and stronger. We felt empowered. But most of all, we had fun and lots and lots of laughter! I wish to connect that feeling of empowerment, fun and creative joy with practical business strategies for women lawyers. Are you ready to become a legal goddess and join other like-minded women lawyers in the Legal Goddess Network™?
